July 16, 1927 — April 12, 2021

Janet L. Hawk, 93, of New Philadelphia, Ohio passed away peacefully in her home on April 12, 2021, with her children by her side following a period of declining health, while in the care of Community Hospice.

Born in Parral, Ohio on July 16, 1927, Janet was the oldest of three children born to the late John J. Marburger and Clara (Abrecht) Marburger. She graduated from Dover High School with the class of 1945 and received her nursing certificate from Massillon City Hospital School of Nursing in 1948. She worked as a nurse at University Hospitals, Union Hospital, Community Hospice, as well as assisting in her husband’s dental office.

She was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ and a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in New Philadelphia. In 1997, she traveled with her husband to Honduras with members of the First Christian Church, where they provided dental care for the colony of Ocotillo.

Janet will be dearly missed for her love of cooking and baking. She was an accomplished seamstress, sewing clothing and blankets for her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed picking strawberries to use for her strawberry jam and ice cream. Janet had a love of tennis, golf, reading, and an endless taste for chocolate. She enjoyed the companionship of her “Cousin’s Club” throughout her entire life. As a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she deeply cherished relationships with her family. But most of all, she will be missed and remembered for her love, generosity, and kindness of which she gave so freely to all.

She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Gene R. Hawk whom she wed on September 5, 1948, her sister Cynthia T. Tanney, and her brother John J. “Jack” Marburger Jr. Together, Gene and Janet raised five children; Barbara A. Hawk (fiancé William J. Novak), Karen S. Dunford (Robert), Dr. Edwin J. Hawk (Lorrie), Jane M. Hawk, and Sally Hawk Stephenson (Robert).

Also surviving are ten grandchildren; Ashley R. Fisher (Michael), Devin A. Torrey (Brianna), Braden A. Torrey, Elyse M. Holodnak (Joe), Michael R. Dunford (Kate), Dr. Carrie A. Carroll (John), Timothy J. Hawk, Elizabeth K. Hawk, John H. Stephenson II (Mollie) and Sarah Elizabeth Stephenson; and twelve great-grandchildren, Quinn L. Fisher, Hallie M. Fisher, Owen X. Carroll, Savanna B. Torrey, Silas G. Torrey, Stetson A. Torrey, Sidney B. Dunford, Charli J. Holodnak, Blair W. Stephenson, Evelyn M. Stephenson, Bray E. Stephenson, and Warren L. Stephenson.

In keeping with her wishes, Janet’s cremated remains will be interred next to her husband’s grave in Dover Burial Park. A graveside service for family will be held at a later date.
