William Scott Groom

November 16, 1958 — July 22, 2015

William Scott Groom, age 56, of New Philadelphia, died peacefully in his residence, surrounded by his family, on Wednesday evening, July 22, 2015, following a brief battle with cancer.

A son of Roy E. Groom of Canton and the late Janet M. (Campbell) Flowers, Bill was born in Union Hospital at Dover on November, 16, 1958.

Following his graduation from New Philadelphia High School in 1977, Bill attended Massillon Baptist Bible College. He later began working for the City of New Philadelphia, where he was known as “Trucker Bill” by his colleagues. He has had the opportunity to work in the General Services, Park and most Recently Water Treatment Departments.

In his free time, Bill enjoyed various types of car racing from dirt track, drag racing, and NASCAR. He also enjoyed landscaping, hunting and had a mind and skill-set which allowed him to repair almost any broken object.

His motto, “others before self”, is not something he professed, but lived daily. Always giving away the latest gadget or useful tool to others was a joy for Bill. He often set aside his own projects to help others in need and made sure his family’s needs were met before his own. He loved talking about any subject that came up in conversation and was loved by all who had an opportunity to meet him.

In addition to his father, Bill will be missed by his three children, Jennifer Host of Stone Creek, Charity (David) Harshman, and William C. Groom all of New Philadelphia; a granddaughter, Ashley Host; his former son-in-law, Mark Host, his siblings, Paula Berry, Jeffery Groom, Sara Graham, Debbie Proper, and Kara McCollough; a niece Alexis Brubaker, and a nephew, Seth Berry.

The family will greet guests on Sunday, July 26, 2015 from 2:00 – 5:00 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia where Pastor Mike Ballentine will lead a service celebrating Bill’s life at 5:00 PM.
