William “Bill” Carlson, 88, of New Philadelphia died Friday, July 31, 2015, in Union Hospital at Dover with his family by his side.
Bill was born on September 22, 1926 in Centerville, Pennsylvania a son of the late Alfred and Myrtle (Snyder) Carlson.
As a young man he trained as a paratrooper in the US Army at Fort Bragg, NC and Camp Maxey, TX, and enjoyed talking about his many adventures.
Bill began working at a very young age. At one time, he operated his own trucking business and later retired from The Timken Company at New Philadelphia, where he was recognized for outstanding attendance during his 17 years of service. A longtime member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church at New Philadelphia, Bill and his wife, Jean, spent many years serving the church as custodians.
An avid raspberry gardener, Bill enjoyed working in his raspberry patch. Bill would take care of the growing, and his wife, Jean, would use them to make her “famous” raspberry pie.
Among his many passions, one of his biggest interests was in restoring old cars and attending car shows with his family. He was very proud of the trophies he’d won for his 1932 and 1941 Chevrolets. Often when speaking with Bill, he shared the story about how he once entered both cars in a show and took home both first and second place.
Above all, Bill was a devoted, hardworking family man who enjoyed helping others, and was proud of each of his family members and their accomplishments.
Bill is survived by his wife of 63 years, the former Glenna Jean Taylor, whom he married on October 18, 1952; a son William (Jan) Carlson; four daughters Barbara (Vic) Whiting; Joan (Chuck) Stull, Karen (Doug) Urfer and Linda (Steve) Higley; eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Completing the family are his sister, Helen (Jerry) Weaver; his brother Ronald Carlson and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his grandson, Charles Stull, III and his siblings, Don, Ruth and Luella.
