William “Bill” Lewis Haakinson, 88, long time resident of New Philadelphia, died Sunday, March 26, 2006, at Union Hospital.A son of the late Melvin and Lillian Perry Haakinson, Bill was born April 25, 1917, in New Philadelphia, O.He was a 1935 graduate of New Philadelphia High School and attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison banking school. He was retired as a Regional President with National City Bank, in charge of the New Philadelphia and Carrollton branches. He began his banking career with the Ohio Savings and Trust, in New Philadelphia and retired in 1982.Bill was a member of Schoenbrunn Moravian Church and had formerly served on its board. He belonged to the New Philadelphia Elks, and the Atwood Yacht Club and was a former member of the Union Country Club and New Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce. He will be remembered by many as an avid walker, often seen walking around town on his daily walk.He was a WWII veteran having served in both the European and Pacific Theatres with the Eighth Air Force.Bill is survived by a daughter, Patricia A. (Hal) Alles, of Lake Oswego, Ore.; two sons, William A. (Roanne) Haakinson, of Batesville, Ind., and Jack L. (Becky) Haakinson, of New Philadelphia; six grandsons, David (Shana) Alles and Jason Alles, of Oregon, Brian Haakinson and Matthew Haakinson, of Batesville, Ind., Andrew Haakinson, of Tuscon, Az., and James Haakinson, of New Philadelphia; three granddaughters, Margaret Haakinson, of Chicago, Ill., Elizabeth Haakinson, of Batesville, Ind., and Nichole Haakinson, of New Philadelphia; two great grandsons, Cody Haakinson, of Batesville, Ind., and Owen William Alles, of Oregon; sister, Mary Jane Harmon, of Canton; a niece and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Kathryn J. “Candy” Kopp, whom he married August 16, 1942 and a sister, Virginia Bair.Visitation will be Friday, March 31, 2006, from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory, in New Philadelphia with an Elk service at 6:15 p.m. Funeral Services will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Sue Koenig officiating. Burial will be beside his wife in East Avenue Cemetery. The New Philadelphia VFW will provide military honors.A memorial reception will be held in the Geib Family Center, in New Philadelphia, following the committal.The family suggests memorial contributions in memory of Bill, be made to the Schoenbrunn Moravian Church, 2200 E. High Ave., New Philadelphia, OH 44663.
