William E. Long, age 86, of Dover and formerly of Hopedale, passed away on November 5, 2009, in his home, with his family at his side. A son of the late David E. Long and Lula M. (Rigle) Long, Bill was born on December 19, 1922, at Hopedale, Ohio. Having served in the Corp of Engineers in the European Theater and the South West Pacific Theater of operations during World War II; Bill retired from Federal Civil Service, in January 1979, as the Unit Administrator of Det.1 Btry C 2/174 ADA Bn. Bill was a proud retired Army Command Sgt. Major of the 2/174 Ada Bn; retiring on December 19, 1982, following 37 years of military service.Bill was a member of the Hopedale Church of Christ where he served as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher. He also held affiliations with the VFW Post 7477 at Hopedale, Ohio, the Steubenville Post 33 of the American Legion, Red Oaks Country Club, Briarcliffe RV Resort of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and the Tuscarawas Senior Center. Along with his wife they owned and operated the Alameda Inn of Hopedale in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s. He and his wife of 63 years were avid ballroom and line dancers, golfers and enjoyed traveling by recreational vehicles. They were also the proudest GRANDPARENTS.Bill is survived by his best friend and wife, Cornelia (Connie) J. Romans Long of Dover, Ohio; and a Son, Loren David Long of Zanesville, Ohio. Three Grandchildren Krisda M. (Dusty) Kinsey, New Philadelphia, Ohio, Tricia A. (Bo) Touville of Norwich, Ohio and Morgan Alan Long of St. Clairsville, Ohio as well as three great grandchildren, Guy M. Long of Norwich, Ohio, Casy Lee Kinsey, and Kelci E. Kinsey both of New Philadelphia, Ohio complete the family.In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Joyce; a son, Keith O. Long as well as a sister and brother-in-law, Helen V. and George Ringer.The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 8, 2009, from 2:00 â?? 5:00 PM in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover and again one hour prior to services on Monday, November 9, 2009, from 10:00 â?? 11:00 AM. Bill’s longtime friend, Dean Blythe will lead a service celebrating his life in the Dover funeral center at 11:00 AM on Monday. A 2:00 PM burial in the New Alexandria Cemetery at New Alexandria, Ohio will follow where a military detail will perform burial honors.Those unable to attend may send the family personal condolences by signing the online guest registry located on the funeral home’s website.The family requests that memorial contributions in Bill’s name be directed to Hospice of Tuscarawas County, 201 W Third Street, Dover, Ohio 44622.
