Wendy Sue Gerber, age 49, of Dover went to be with the Lord, while in the care of Community Hospice House at New Philadelphia following a two and a half year hard fought and courageous battle with cancer.
A daughter of Carol (Cline) Gerber of Dover and the late William Gerber, Wendy was born in Union Hospital at Dover on June 30, 1964.
She obtained her primary education from Dover City Schools prior to the family relocating to Colorado. In 1983, Wendy completed her high school education at Cañon City where she excelled in volleyball and basketball.
Shortly after high school, Wendy enlisted into the United States Army where she served her country for more than four years where she was involved in Operation Just Cause at Panama and specialized in communications during her tenure. Upon her return to Tuscarawas County, she was employed by Wal-Mart at New Philadelphia.
In her younger years, Wendy was actively involved with 4-H where she spent numerous years caring for and showing horses. Caring for animals eventually became a lifelong passion. Through the years, Wendy not only enjoyed horses but deeply loved her dog, Mia. Her other passions in life included her membership at the First Baptist Church at New Philadelphia where she enjoyed outings and gatherings with many of her friends from the congregation. She also loved supporting her nieces by attending their sporting and other school activities. Among her other hobbies, Wendy liked watching sporting events on television.
Above all, Wendy was grateful for all the cards, visits and prayers she received from her many friends and family members; each of them lifted her up and gave her strength as her illness progressed.
In addition to her mother, Wendy will be missed by two brothers, William A. (Norma) Gerber of Thomasville, Georgia and Robert J. (Cathy) Gerber of New Philadelphia; a step-sister, June Ann Gerber-Farnsworth of Florida; a former sister-in-law, Beverly Gerber of Florida; nieces and nephew, Brittney, Brooke and Billy Gerber, Candice Hobbs, Amanda Lawrence, Hannah, Sara and Ellie Gerber and a great niece, Madison Williams. Completing the family are numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and extended family members.
In addition to her father, Wendy was preceded in death by grandparents, Charles and Mary Buechele and Andrew and Mary Gerber.
The family will receive guests on Saturday, February 22, 2014 from 9:00 – 11:00 AM in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover where Pastor Andy Schulze, will lead a service celebrating Wendy’s life at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow in Ruslin Hills Cemetery. Following services, all are invited to return to the Hospitality Center of the Dover Geib Center where a meal and fellowship will be shared.
