Wayne W. Whitcomb, Sr., 88, of New Philadelphia, died Monday, September 25, 2006 in Country Club Retirement Center at Dover.Born September 27, 1917 in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, Wayne was the son of Walter and Delia (Green) Whitcomb.He lived most of his life in Wolcott, Vermont where he owned and operated Wolcott Garage for 25 years. After selling the garage, he worked for General Electric in Burlington, Vermont from which he retired in 1978.Wayne enjoyed fishing in Pond Brook in Wolcott, Vermont and was a lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox.He married the former Christine Reynolds on February 28, 1940 and together they raised six children. Wayne and Christine celebrated their sixty-sixth anniversary just before her death on April 16, 2006.He is survived by his children, Leon (Rhoda Bedell) Whitcomb of Morrisville, Vermont, Mason Whitcomb and his companion Sharon Hersey of Waterbury Center, Vermont, Lorrain Carvalho of Dover, Ohio, Shirley (David) Bridges of New Philadelphia, Ohio and Arlene (John) Tramell of Cottondale, Florida.He also leaves behind 10 grandchildren which include, Brian (Michelle) Bridges, Dave Bridges and his companion, Debbie Fitzgerald and Dan Bridges all of New Philadelphia and seven great-grandchildren which include Tyler Bridges of New Philadelphia.In addition to his parents and his wife, Wayne was preceded in death by an infant son, Roger, an adult son Wayne, Jr, a grandson, Roger Whitcomb and two sisters and one brother.In keeping with Wayne’s wishes, there will be no public visitation or services observed and cremation will take place at the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Wolcott, Vermont.
