Wayne L. Cory, 85, of New Philadelphia, died Tuesday, November 24, 2009 in Mercy Medical Center at Canton following a short illness.The youngest of ten children to the late Orlo and Carrie (Washburn) Cory, Wayne was born July 11, 1924 at Kane, Pennsylvania.Wayne graduated from Kane High School before attending Business College at Buffalo, New York. He was also a veteran of the United States Army serving in Korea.On January 14, 1950 at Kittanning, Pennsylvania, Wayne married the former Leah Sowers and together the couple raised two children, Susan and Thomas.Wayne retired as the Director of the Tuscarawas County Board of Elections in 1986 and prior to that he was employed for nearly 25 years at the former Hoosier Engineering Company at New Philadelphia.Since 1953, Wayne was a member of the First United Methodist Church at New Philadelphia. He was also a member of New Philadelphia Lodge # 177 of the F. & A.M., the York Rite Bodies, the Scottish Rite, Valley of Canton, and a life member of the New Philadelphia Elks Lodge #510. Wayne also volunteered much of his time to Mobile Meals.He was an avid woodworker and gardener and he enjoyed playing cards. Wayne especially enjoyed spending time with his family.Wayne is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Leah Cory; his daughter, Susan (Steve) Bair of New Philadelphia; his son, Thomas Cory of Cheyenne, Wyoming; four grandchildren, Thomas “Bill” Cory of Columbus, Ohio, Jessica (Matt) Kinsey of New Philadelphia, Shannon Cory of Daleville, Alabama and Stephanie (fiancé Jason Karlowicz) St. Louis, Missouri; two great grandchildren, Julia and Jackson Kinsey; a sister, Daphne Miller of London, Kentucky; two sisters-in-law, Beatrice Wagner of Colorado and Millie Reesman of Kittanning, Pennsylvania and numerous nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents and eight siblings.The family will receive guests on Friday, November 27, 2009 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home at New Philadelphia with Elks services being held at 5:45 p.m. and Masonic services at 7:45 p.m. A funeral service celebrating Wayne’s life will be held on Saturday, November 28, 2009 at 12:30 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Chapel with Dr. Rev. Steven Bailey officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia. Following the committal service, a memorial reception will be held in the Geib Family Center at New Philadelphia.Contributions may be made in Wayne’s memory to the First United Methodist, 201 West High Avenue, New Philadelphia, OH 44663.
