Wayne C. Wilkinson, age 85, of Dover, and formerly of New Philadelphia, passed away peacefully early Friday morning, December 21, 2012, in Union Hospital at Dover.
Born at New Philadelphia, February 15, 1927, he was a son of the late Clyde C. and Hazel C. Swinderman Wilkinson.
Best known as “Wilkie” to his friends, he attended New Philadelphia High School before joining the United States Navy in the midst of World War II. He served honorably through his discharge in 1946.
On July 20, 1949, He wed the former Donna Jean Beans, and together have celebrated sixty-three years of marriage.
Wilkie was a life member of the former Midvale VFW, and then the New Philadelphia VFW, as well as the First United Methodist Church at New Philadelphia. He’ll be remembered for his meticulous care of the grounds around his home, for his enjoyment of hunting and fishing, and for the special place he had in his heart for his faithful companion, his dog, Spike. Although retired, Wilkie was a longtime member of Laborers Union Local # 134 of Newcomerstown.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include his daughter, Amy (husband, Kevin) Puhl of New Philadelphia, a granddaughter, Amanda Malcuit, of New Philadelphia, and two step-granddaughters, Vicki Puhl of Boardman, and Kristin (Matthew) Pauli, of Alliance.
In addition to his parents, two sisters, Margie Singerman and Betty Barker, are also deceased.
The Rev. Dr. Steve Bailey will lead a private graveside service for Mr. Wilkinson in Evergreen Burial Park where he will be laid to rest with military honors. There are no public calling hours.
