Warren Dean Berndt, age 85, of New Philadelphia, died Friday, October 23, 2009, in Union Hospital at Dover.”Uncle Dean”, as he was known to his family and friends was born on January 12, 1924, at Dover, Ohio. He was a son to the late William and Henrietta (Huffman) Berndt.Mr. Berndt was one of the first young men in the area to receive a draft card and ultimately served with the United States Army 3rd Armored Division where he specialized as an Automotive Mechanic.Following his discharge Mr. Berndt married the love of his life, the former Mary Edwards on June 24, 1952. Together the couple would rear three children and share a union for more than 30 years prior to her passing.For 46 years, Mr. Berndt was employed by the former Standard Oil Company and it was through his long tenure as the filling station’s area manager he became a familiar face to those in the community.Mr. Berndt was a longtime member of the Carl C. Stoller Post 1445 of the New Philadelphia VFW; where he was usually found playing a game of pool and enjoying the fellowship of friends. Mr. Berndt also enjoyed telling stories and sharing jokes with his family and friends but also found joy in the quiet times which included traveling the country side on an evening drive or spending time reading a novel about the old-west.Mr. Berndt will be missed by his family which includes his three children, Victor (Kathy) Berndt of Lakeland, Florida, Raymond E. (Mildred) Butts and Cheryl Rennicker all of New Philadelphia and a brother, Burman Berndt of Dover.Eight grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, seven great-great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews complete the family.In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Berndt was preceded in death by five brothers, two sisters, and a son-in-law, Howard Rennicker.In keeping with Mr. Berndt’s wishes there will be no public services. Cremation care will be conducted by Geib’s Tuscarawas Valley Crematory at Dover. A private burial in the Ridgecrest Memory Gardens will be held at a later date.
