Wanda Mae Cheslock, age 94 of Mineral City, died early Wednesday evening, January 1, 2014 in Park Village Health Care Center at Dover.
A daughter of the late Esber and Lydia Ruth (Ulrich) Strawn, Wanda was born at New Cumberland on January 12, 1919.
She attended school at New Cumberland and on May 13, 1937, Wanda married John A. Cheslock. Early in her career, Wanda was employed for a number of years by Atwood Lodge where she worked as a waitress. She later joined the staff of Union Hospital at Dover as a nurse’s aide for more than 15 years prior to retiring so she could care for her granddaughters.
In her later years, Wanda and John enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Canada until John’s health would no longer permit travel. Wanda the ever devoted wife, lovingly cared for her beloved husband for the last 20 plus years of his life until his passing in 2004.
A passionate and patient individual by nature, Wanda loved being around children, especially her granddaughters. In addition to caring for them, she will long be remembered for numerous vacations, swimming adventures at Atwood Lake, making clothes, and playing games for hours on end with each of them.
Others will remember Wanda as a member of the New Cumberland United Methodist Church and her active involvement during her younger years. She was also known for her exceptional hospitality to guests of her home and making sure all who entered were well fed with her exceptional cooking.
In addition to her skills as a cook, Wanda excelled at sewing and gardening and also loved caring for animals.
Wanda is survived by two granddaughters, Anne (Paul Jr.) Dunn of Somerdale, Ohio and Christie (Mark) Snyder of Canton, Ohio and three great- grandchildren, Cody and Brittany Thompson and Emmylou Dunn.
Completing the family are a sister, Virginia Ewing of Massillon, Ohio, two nieces and two nephews.
In addition to her parents, and husband, Wanda was preceded in death by her son and long-time caregiver, John David Cheslock, who died on December 4, 2013 and a sister, Helen Ewing.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, January 5, 2014 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover.
