Walter M. Yates 78, of New Philadelphia, died Thursday May 26, 2005 at his home.A son of the late Daniel C. and Sally B Dunn Yates from Virginia, Walter was born Nov. 2, 1926 in Columbus, O. He married Olive “Eleanor” Stidd on Dec. 6, 1980 in Monroeville, O.He enlisted in the U.S. Army July 21, 1945 was honorably discharged and enlisted the next day in the U.S. Army Air Force where he served as a sniper until March 1, 1947. He served as a PFC 3rd class He was a recipient of the WWII Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal. He worked on the B&O Railroad as a conductor for 25 years until his retirement. He then worked as a truck driver for the Teamsters Union for another 24 years.He was a member of the Roby Lodge at Monroeville O., Scottish Rite Valley of Toledo, Zenobia Shriners of Toledo and an honorary member of the New Philadelphia Masonic Blue Lodge Tuscarawas Chapter and Council. He was also an avid hunter and all around outdoorsman and spent many hours wandering the woods enjoying Gods creation. He especially enjoyed bear and deer hunting.In addition to his wife his wife of 24 years he is survived by; one daughter, Beverly (David) Farmer; three sons Daniel (Donna) Yates, Lowery Yates, Russell (Caroline) Yates; stepchildren Kenneth (Theresa) Stidd, Terry Stidd, Jean (Denver) Moore, Charlie Stidd, Rick (Connie) Stidd, Virginia (Fred) Milburn, Stanley Stidd, Jeff (Barb) Cornwell, Kenneth (Sue) Cornwell. He also had 39 grandchildren and 63 great-grandchildren.Walter was preceded in death by one brother, Samuel Lee Yates; and one grandchild.Visitation will be Tuesday May 31, 2005 from 6 to 8 P.M. and Wednesday June 1st from 1 to 2 P.M. in the Geib Funeral Center, 5600 N. Wooster Ave Dover, O., with Masonic Service at 7:45 P.M. Services will be conducted by Pastor Web Parsons of the Arlington Ave. Church of God Akron, O. on Wednesday June 1, 2005 at 2 P.M. at the Geib Center. Interment will be at Ridgecrest Memory Gardens Dover, O. with the VFW Midvale performing military honors. A reception for family members will follow the service at the Geib Center Dover, O.Memorial contributions to honor Walters’s life may be sent to Hospice of Tuscarawas County, 201 Third Street, Dover, OH 44622.
