Wallace G. “Wally” Hahn 79, of 469 Church Ave. SW, New Philadelphia and formerly of Baltic died Sunday June 15, 2003. Wally was born on April 5, 1924 to the late Albert P. and Gladys (Bretzius) Hahn Sr. He was a sports enthusiast his whole life and been known to listen/watch 3 to 4 sporting events at the same time. He was a World War II Army veteran. In the Army, Wallace went to Camp Grant in a Chicago suburb to take basic training as a medic. Then he went in to ESTP (Engineering Training Program) and took college courses at Michigan State. He next took college courses for a year at Penn State, until that program broke up about Easter 1944. His next assignment was to the Indian Town Gap 95th Infantry Division in Pa. as a medic. When D-Day occurred, his unit was at Elkins, W.Va. taking mountain climbing school. They were called back to Indian Town Gap, and two weeks later were headed to Camp Miles Standish in Boston. One week later his unit headed for Europe by way of Liverpool, England. Next they took a train to Winchester, where they stayed until they crossed the English Channel. They landed at LaHarve, France and where there two weeks before heading to the front line with Patton’s 95th Division (3rd Army). Finally in November 1945, Wally was discharged at returned home to Baltic.Once back in Baltic, Wally began working at Gerber’s Feed Mill in Baltic, After taking a Post office test, he was hired as a postal clerk in Baltic in April 1947. In January 1966 he was appointed the full time rural carrier for the Baltic Post Office. He held that position until he retired in June of 1981.Wally has been very active in community organizations locally and at the state level. In 1949 he was a charter member of the Baltic Lions Club. He served in various offices of the Lions Club, including President, Secretary and Tail Twister. A lifetime member of Zion UCC, he also served as deacon and on the church council. An active member of the Tuscarawas County Rural Carriers Association, he also served several terms as president and secretary of the organization. He served as secretary for the 3rd district of the State Rural Carriers Association, in addition he served as state committeeman from 1975-1977 and as state Vice-president of the Ohio Rural Carriers Association in 1977. He was also a member of Baltic City Council from 1981-1993 and had acted as coordinator for the road to recovery program of the Tuscarawas County American Cancer Society for 5 years. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his siblings; Harriet E. Hahn, Pauline Alberta Hahn, Albert ” Pete” Hahn Jr., Winifred Brown, Philip Hahn and Martha Machi. He is survived by his wife of 50 years Eileen (Stephon) Hahn, daughters; Gayle Hahn of New Philadelphia and Denise (Mike) Cottonbrook of Canton, Grandsons; Mike, Ben and Drew, sister Dorothy (Dale) Lirgg of New Philadelphia and his dog Pepper.Funeral services will be held on Thursday June 19, 2003 at 11:00 AM at Zion United Church of Christ in Baltic, with Rev. Sharon Jacobsen officiating. Interment will be at West Lawn Cemetery where Dover VFW Post #3463 where conduct military graveside services. Friends may call on Wednesday from 5 to 8 PM at the Smith-Geib Funeral Home, 321 N. Butler St., BALTIC. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Zion United Church of Christ.
