Virl W. Stalnaker, age 89, of the Ohio Veterans Home of Sandusky and formerly of New Philadelphia, passed away Tuesday, December 23, 2014, following a period of declining health.
A son of the late Van and Lula (Underwood) Stalnaker, Virl and his twin brother, Virlin were born August 28, 1925 in Braxton County, West Virginia and grew up on the family farm at Dingy, West Virginia.
At a young age, the twin brothers made a pact to never separate. As fate would have it, the two were assigned to the USS Riverside during World War II. It was during their time in the Navy they developed their ability to sing together. Following their discharge, the duo embarked on a career in Country Music.
On June 4, 1949, Virl married the former Geraldine M Ledsome, and they celebrated 42 years of marriage prior to her passing in 1991. Once relocated to the Tuscarawas Valley, Virl became a member of the Dover Baptist Temple and began a 41 year career with the Marsh Lumber Company, retiring in 1991.
It was during revival services at Dover Baptist Temple that the twins dedicated their lives to Christ, and as the Harmony Twins, began their Evangelistic Gospel singing career. The pair toured the United States for nearly 40 years, performing many of their own songs, and appeared on numerous radio stations and television programs. They also produced over 20 recordings throughout their career.
Virl is survived by his children, Virl (Sandra) Stalnaker, Jr. of Vancouver, Washington, Roger (Nickole) Stalnaker of Alaska, Beverly (Edward) Grant of Uniontown, and Terry (Linda) Stalnaker of Dover; a brother, Dana Stalnaker of Talcott West Virginia; 10 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, Virl was preceded in death by his twin brother, Virlin Stalnaker; brothers, Kelsie and Thurl Stalnaker; sisters, Opal Jarvis, Irene Jarvis and Marvis Rollyson.
The family will greet guests on Monday, December 29, 2014 from 4:00 – 7:00 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A service celebrating Virl’s life will be led by his son, Pastor Virl Stalnaker, Jr. in the funeral home’s chapel on Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at 11:00 AM. Burial, with military honors, will follow in the East Avenue Cemetery.
Memorial contributions in Virl’s honor may be directed to the Ohio Veterans Home, 3416 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky, Ohio 44870.
