Virginia L. Turley

Virginia L. Turley, 84, a lifelong resident of New Philadelphia and loyal friend of children, died Monday, April 16, 2007 after a courageous battle with cancer.Born August 9, 1922 in New Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late Evan and Mary Frances.After completing her high school education, she continued her academic career at The Ohio University, graduating with a teaching certificate in primary education. After her professional education, she went on to share her talents and passion for children as a primary educator at West Elementary for more than 30 years. Virginia also donated numerous years to the New Philadelphia school system, assisting in kindergarten screening.Her unwavering love for her church was evident in the numerous activities she participated in including the church choir for more than 50 years, Sunday school teaching, countless Vacation Bible School programs, the Advent Workshop children’s craft table to name a few. She was also a devoted member of the Singing Strings and the Underground Weavers.She and Tom were regular customers of the J-N-G Grille having dined numerous times a week at the restaurant since the early 1950s. Together, they also enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and internationally. Virginia will be remembered by many but especially her family which includes her husband of 56 years, Thomas J. Turley whom she married on October 12, and numerous nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.Visitation will be held Friday, April 20 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A service celebrating Virginia’s life will be held Saturday at 11:00am in the First United Church of Christ, 201 Fair Ave., New Philadelphia with Revs. Jeff Gerber and Jill Lovett officiating. In keeping with Virginia’s wishes, cremation will follow the service.Virginia was an individual passionate about children, reading, and West Elementary school.
