Virginia I. Adkins, age 79, of New Philadelphia died Thursday, May 8, 2008, following a lengthy illness in New Dawn Health Care Center at Dover surrounded by her loving family.Born on October 9, 1928, at Dover, Virginia was a daughter of the late Samuel A. and V. Marguerite McCluggage Bucher. After attending New Philadelphia High School, Virginia married Ernest Lax and together the couple raised two daughters until his passing in 1955.In December of 1957, Virginia married Paul W. Adkins and together they added a son and a daughter to their union.For many years Virginia served her family as a homemaker and in 1978 completed her education and obtained her GED. From there, she continued her formal education and obtained a Dietary Assistant Certification.For several years following, Virginia worked in the dietary department for New Dawn.When she wasn’t cooking at work, she could be found cooking in her kitchen at home. She will be most remembered for her ability to make delicious apple dumplings and potato salad.Additionally, Virginia was a fan of both the Cleveland Indians and Atlanta Braves baseball teams.Virginia’s later years were spent enjoying the company of her family, especially her grandchildren. She is survived by her four children; three daughters, Sandy (Rick) Engler, Bonnie Lax (Jonathan) Sprinkle, Cheryl Baker and fiancé Barry Shepherd all of New Philadelphia and Greg (Ida) Adkins of Atlanta, Georgia; and a sister Bessie Bonisolli of New Philadelphia.Virginia will be missed by her nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren who complete the family.In addition to her parents and first husband, Virginia is preceded in death by her second husband, Paul, three sisters, two brothers and one great-grandchild.The family will receive friends on Monday, May 12, 2008, from 6:00PM â?? 8:00PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia and again one hour prior to services. At Virginia’s request, her son, Greg, will conduct an 11:00 service on Tuesday, May 13, 2008, in the funeral home’s chapel with burial to follow in the Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia.Following the committal the family would like to invite guests to join them for a luncheon in the Geib Family Center, adjacent to the New Philadelphia funeral home.Those unable to attend are encouraged to send personal condolences and sign the online guest registry located on the funeral home’s website.The family requests that contributions in Virginia’s name be made to The National Kidney Foundation of Ohio, 1373 Grandview Ave., Suite 200, Columbus, Ohio 43212-2804 or to the American Diabetes Association, 1815 West Market Street, Suite 108, Akron, Ohio. 44313-7018.
