Virginia Carol Cunningham, age 86, of Atwood Lake, died peacefully, Wednesday, August 14, 2024, in her residence while under the care of Traditions Hospice.
Born in Dover, Ohio on January 30, 1938, Virginia was a daughter of the late Frederick and Catherine Reese Meyer.
She was a graduate of New Philadelphia High School and furthered her education at Purdue University where she obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry. She used her degree as an educator having taught Science at Conotton Valley High School for many years.
In the mid-1980s, Virginia made the decision to move to the Atwood Lake region, a place that had been close to her heart since childhood. Her years there were filled with cherished moments sailing and pontoon boating, all while enjoying the serene beauty of her surroundings. Virginia’s passions extended beyond the lake; her deep love for animals shone through as she dedicated time to visiting schools, hospitals, and nursing homes with her beloved therapy dog, Alfie. Her remarkable green thumb allowed her to nurture and grow any plant with ease. Additionally, Virginia remained deeply engaged with the world around her, keeping a keen eye on political developments and current events. Her vibrant spirit and compassionate nature left a lasting impact on everyone she encountered.
Virginia is survived by her daughter, Frederica “Rica” Dial; her son, Arthur Cunningham, III; her grandchildren, Abigail Dial, Amanda Dial and Jackson Dial; and her nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Virginia is preceded in death by a sister, Eleanor Dutton, and a brother, Edward Meyer.
In keeping with Virginia’s wishes, there will be no public visitation or services. The Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia is handling cremation care.
