Violet I. Sweeney, 91, of New Philadelphia, died Wednesday, November 12, 2003 at Union Hospital in Dover following a brief illness.Born in Newcomerstown, she was the daughter of the late John R. and Edna I. Myers Gay. She was a very caring and giving person especially to her family and friends and also loved to cook and sew.Her husband, John J. Sweeney, preceded her in death on January 31, 1995. Surviving are a granddaughter, Robin Sweeney of Lake In The Hills, Illinois; a daughter-in-law, Jean Sweeney of New Philadelphia; a brother, Dean (Nora) Gay of Newcomerstown and numerous nieces and nephews that include, Betty Kempf of New Philadelphia, Joan Wadsworth of Kansas, Richard Luce of Uhrichsville, David Luce of Dover and Tim Luce of Florida. In addition to her parents and her husband, a son, Theodore R. Sweeney, two brothers, Robert Gay and Gilbert Gay and a sister, Wilma Luce are also precede her in death.Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 15, 2003 at 11:00 AM at the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home in New Philadelphia with Rev. William Sowers officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in New Philadelphia. Visitation will be held Friday, November 14, 2003, from 6 to 8 PM in the funeral home. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, Area Office #12, 201-A West Ohio Avenue, Dover, Ohio, 44622.
