Viola May Ickes

August 23, 1907 — February 14, 2002

Viola M. Ickes, 94, of Country Club Retirement Center, Dover, and a long-time resident of Washington, D.C., died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, in the center, following a sudden illness.Born Aug. 23, 1907, in New Philadelphia, she was a daughter of the late John Wesley Ickes and Charlotte “Lottie” Dempster Ickes. Viola was a 1925 graduate of New Philadelphia High School, and attended the College of Wooster. She was a registered nurse, having received her training at Children’s Hospital, Washington, D.C. Viola also attended Georgetown University.In her early years as a nurse, she was employed by the family of Congressman Frank H. Buck of California at their residence in Washington. Viola later worked at Children’s Hospital, Washington, and retired from the Gallaudet School for the Deaf, also of Washington, after many years of service.She was a member of the Foundry United Methodist Church, Washington, for many years. Viola maintained a life-long interest in the arts, and her life in Washington suited that interest well. She was a member of the Kennedy Center and the National Geographic Society. Viola enjoyed reading, and was knowledgeable on many different topics.She is survived by a sister, Lillian Burkey of Dover; numerous nieces and nephews, including John W. Ickes, Jr., of New Philadelphia, Rachel (Frederick) Capozella of Dover, James R. (Betty) Ickes of Strasburg, and Deanna (Dwight) Enold of North Canton; many great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to her parents, three brothers; a nephew; and a great-niece preceded her in death.A public graveside service will be held Saturday, Mar. 2, 2002, at 11 a.m., in Fair Street Cemetery. Dr. Steven R. Bailey of the First United Methodist Church, New Philadelphia, will officiate. Immediately following the service, there will be a luncheon in the Geib Family Center.
