Viola M. West

Viola M. West, age 87, of New Philadelphia died Saturday, January 12, 2013 under the care of Community Hospice following a brief illness.

A daughter of the late Wilfred and Verna L. (McGuire) Dainty, Viola was born in the family home at New Philadelphia on September 13, 1925.

She was a 1943 graduate of New Philadelphia High School and attended business college following graduation.

For a period of time, she worked for Ohio Power and on November 20, 1948 she married Howard F. West. As the couple began their family, Viola turned her attention to the home and became a homemaker and caregiver to those around her.

She was an avid reader who also loved quilting, baking, and enjoying the out of doors from her back porch as the weather would allow. Additionally, Viola loved visits from and being a caregiver to her grandchildren and was especially fond of the special attention given to her by grandson, Kyle.

She is survived by a son, William (Darlene) West of Dover; two daughters, Joyce (Larry) Knoll of Grove City, and Elizabeth Meechan of New Philadelphia and a sister, M. Evelyn Kinsey of New Philadelphia.

Eight grandchildren, Christina Meese, Eric West, Jennifer Moore, Brandon West, Sarah West, Joshua Knoll, Kyle Meechan, and Hannah Meechan; two step-grandchildren, Brian Knoll and Kendra Hecker; four great-grandchildren, Ryan, Hunter, Alexis and Brock Meese as well as numerous nieces and nephews complete the family.

In addition to her parents, Viola is preceded in death by her husband, Howard, whom she shared in nearly 40 years of marriage prior to his passing on April 23, 1988; a son and daughter-in-law, Russell and Karen West and two sisters, Lillian Parr and Jessie Stewart.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 17, 2013 from 4:00 – 7:00 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Pastor Don Snow will lead a service celebrating Viola’s life in the funeral home’s chapel on Friday, January 18, 2013 at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow in the East Avenue Cemetery at New Philadelphia.
