Vernon “Toot” Robertson, 89, passed away Friday, July 22, 2016 in Aultman Hospital at Canton following a brief illness.
A son of the late Nellie Robertson, Vernon was born October 24, 1926 at Cambridge, Ohio.
Vernon served his country as a member of the United States Navy during World War II from 1944 to 1946. Upon his discharge from the Navy, Vernon went to work as a brakeman and a conductor for the Pennsylvania Railroad where he received the nickname “Toot”. He went on to work and retire from IF Manufacturing (RIDGID Tools). Vernon also served as the union secretary for the Steel Workers Union for many years. He was a life member of the Dover VFW and New Philadelphia Elks as well as a member of New Philadelphia AM Vets and Dover Eagles. Vernon was active with the Otterbien United Methodist Church where he was a 50 year member. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, farming and bowling in his free time. He also enjoyed spending time with his close family and friends.
He is survived by his three children, Rhonda (Don) Gray, Renee Stephens and Richard Robertson; eight grandchildren, Corey (Nikki) Mills, Nicole (Dave) Markley, Jeremy Mills , Joey Stephens, Sarah (Jim) Hatfield, and Alicia, Stephanie and Zane Robertson and eight great grandchildren, Hailey, Spencer and Louie Mills, Peyton Noah, and Emma Markley, and Riley and Jordan Hatfield.
In addition to Nellie, Vernon is preceded in death by his wife of 41 years Mildred Jean (White) Robertson whom he married June 13, 1953.
A private family service will be held Tuesday, July 26, 2016 at 7 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia will Pastor Jon Long officiating.
