Vernon Eugene Kail, Jr., age 71, of New Philadelphia, passed away Monday, September 15, 2014 in Union Hospital at Dover following a period of declining health.
Born December 18, 1942, Vernon was the son of Susie (Aubihl) Crone of Dover and the late Vernon Kail, Sr. He was a 1961 graduate of Dover High School, and enlisted in the United States Air Force on August 6, 1963. While in the Air Force, he attained the rank of Sr. Master Sergeant, before retiring in April of 1984. During his career, he served in Vietnam, was stationed in Japan, South Korea and throughout the United States before completing his final assignment at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base at Dayton. Vernon’s responsibility included Supply Specialist and was involved with finance and accounting while at Dayton.
He was a life member of the Carl C. Stoller Post #1445 of the New Philadelphia VFW, as well as a life member of the Vietnam Veterans Association, the American Legion, and was a past Commander of the Disabled American Veterans New Philadelphia Chapter. He also served as a Commissioner with the Tuscarawas County Veterans Service Office, Chairman of the New Philadelphia Veterans Coordinating Committee, and as Co-Chairman of the MS Support Group. Vernon, ever proud to serve his country under the United States flag spent many years visiting local elementary schools teaching students how to properly respect and fold the flag as well as working with the D.A.R.E program.
In addition to his mother, Vernon is survived by his wife, Claudette, whom he married on January 13, 1968; two daughters, Kristina Kail and Jennifer Follweiler of New Philadelphia; three granddaughters, Corissa Kail, Bethany and Lauren Follweiler and a brother, Gerald Kail of Dover.
In addition to his father, Vernon was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents.
The family will greet guests on Thursday, September 18, 2014 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Pastor Brian Flood will lead a service celebrating Vernon’s life in the funeral home’s chapel on Friday, September 19, 2014 at 1:30 PM. Burial, with military honors, will follow in the Evergreen Burial Park, at New Philadelphia. Following services, all are invited to share in a meal and fellowship in the Geib Family Center, adjacent to the funeral home.
Memorial contributions in Vernon’s name may be directed to the Carl C. Stoller Post #1445, 441Park Avenue NW, New Philadelphia, Ohio 44663 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
The family would like to extend deep gratitude and appreciation to the staff of Oak Pointe Nursing and Rehab Center at Baltic and to the staff and doctors of Union Hospital for the wonderful care Vernon received.
