Verlin Maderia “Bud” Pool, 86, of Uhrichsville, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving family on June 12, 2014 following a period of declining health.
Born June 9, 1928 in Piketon Village, Ohio, he was the son of the late Simon Sylvester and Ida Pearl (Mustard) Pool.
After completing his formal education, he served two years in the United States Navy on the “Operation Goodwill Tour” immediately following the end of World War II. Upon his discharge, his professional career was spent with Ohio Bell Telephone Company for 32 years as an installer, repairman and technician.
Bud was an avid fisherman, showed horses, a member of the Tuscarawas County Sheriff Department’s Mounted Deputy Unit and in the early 1960s was a stock car builder and racer. Bud was also a bass player in the local band “Bud Pool and the Wagon Wheels” alongside his daughter, Charlene, for more than 20 years, playing at local festivals. He was a jack of all trades.
His memberships included the Mystic Tie Lodge #194 of Uhrichsville for 42 years and more than 30 years as a member of the B.P.O.E Lodge #429.
On January 19, 1951 in First Christian Church at Uhrichsville, Bud married his lifelong companion and friend, the former June Maxine Stull, who survives.
He will also be deeply missed by his children, Charlene Kehl of Newcomerstown, Peggy (Jim) Hough of Thompsons Station, TN, and Dawna (Tommy) Parsley of Nolensville, TN; his grandchildren, Stacie (Craig) Stein of New Philadelphia, Emmylou (Tyler) Frost of St. Charles, MO, Christopher Kehl of Newcomerstown, Trey and Joshua Parsley of Nolensville, TN, Michael (Julie) Kehl of Newcomerstown, and Susan Mitchel; great-grandchildren, Aiden and Ethan Frost, Mitchell (fiancé, Ashley Hickman) Kehl, and Shannon, Jacob, Erica, Megan, and Paige; and his siblings, Ruth McClosky of Irvine, CA, Phyllis Dickey of Tippecanoe, Ross (Rudale) Pool of Hudson, FL, Fern (Emilio) Poli of Sherrodsville, Karen (Bert) Link of Dellroy, Bonnie (Fred) Strayer of Portsmouth, OH, and Sherry Clark of Alabama.
In addition to his parents, Bud was preceded in death by his sisters, Neta Woods, Evelyn Shoults, and Thelma Harmon; and his son-in-law, Donny Kehl.
Visitation will be held in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover on Thursday, June 19 from 4 to 7 p.m., with a Masonic Lodge of Sorrow commencing at 6:45 p.m. A Celebration of Life will be held in the funeral home on Friday beginning at 11 a.m. with Pastor Danny Legg officiating. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery at Uhrichsville where the Newcomerstown Color Guard will render military honors.
Following the committal service, friends are invited to the Masonic Lodge in Dennison, across from the Dennison Depot, where a meal will be served.
