Verda Gloeckner

Verda E. Gloeckner, 94, of Dover, went home to be with her Lord, on October 15, 2018 in Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital at Dover.

Born in Strasburg on July 3, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Otto and Florence (Keith) Zeltman.

After graduating from Strasburg High School, Verda continued her formal education at the former Cleveland Metropolitan Hospital. She also completed nurse training and served in the United States Cadet Nurse Corps in preparation for World War II. Then, she was recruited by the Red Cross and worked in UCLA’s polio department caring for individuals in iron lungs.

Verda married her late husband, Jay S. Gloeckner in 1952. He preceded her in passing on September 2, 1994. Together, they were blessed with the birth of two daughters and two sons.

Her professional career spanned more than 40 years with the Red Cross, the Arabian American Oil Company and Union Hospital as a registered nurse.

Her faith was nurtured at the Dover Bible Church where she was a member of the bible study group. She was also an alumni member of the Cleveland Metropolitan Hospital.

Verda will be deeply missed by her family including her children, Steven (Karen) Gloeckner and Sandra Gloeckner, both of Dover, and Sharon (Norman) Perkins of California; her grandsons, Zachary (Alexandra) Perkins of Washington, and Jeremy Perkins of California; and her brother, Bob Zeltman of Strasburg.

In addition to her parents and husband, Verda was preceded in passing by her son, Thomas.

Visitation will be held in the Dover Bible Church on Saturday from 12 noon to 2 PM. A service will begin at 2 PM officiated by The Rev. Mark Britton. Burial will follow the service at Grandview Union Cemetery in Strasburg.
