Vella Belle Young Vaughn, 86, of Byesville, died Thursday morning, January 8, 2004 at the Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center in Cambridge following an eight-week illness.Mrs. Vaughn was born in Midvale on August 4, 1917 to the late James Franklin and Eva Lucille Carpenter Young. She graduated from Midvale High School in 1934 and in 1938 she married Courtney Vaughn. They shared 35 years of marriage before his death in 1973.She and Courtney had three children, all of whom survive; daughters, Shirley Ann (Harold) Kidd of Norwich, OH and Virginia (Richard) Pickering of Cambridge; and their son, Robert (Carolyn) Vaughn of New Philadelphia. Ten grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, a brother, Gerald (Lena) Young of Brightwood and a sister, Mary Brewer of Dover, complete the family. In addition to her parents and husband, a sister, Betty Jane Schlarb and a brother, James Franklin Young, Jr., are deceased.Mrs. Vaughn was well known in Tuscarawas County for her work at Union Hospital for several years as assistant dietitian. On August 1, 1953, the hospital administrator, Harold Alden, appointed her head dietitian. Mrs. Vaughn also worked several years at Guernsey Memorial Hospital in Cambridge as a therapeutic dietitian under Dale Gotchall’s administration.Mrs. Vaughn was a member of the American Society of Hospital Food Service Administrators. Since 1947, she was a member of the Salemtown Chapter No. 58, Order of the Eastern Star, in Auburn, NY. Mrs. Vaughn attended the Midvale United Methodist Church.In keeping with Mrs. Vaughn’s request, there will be no calling hours and services will be private. Burial, alongside her husband Courtney, will take place at Evergreen Burial Park.
