V. June Dessecker

June 20, 1925 — September 3, 2015

V. June Dessecker, 90, of New Philadelphia, passed away peacefully in the Hospice House on September 3, 2015, following a period of declining health.

Born in Columbia, O. on June 20, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Ella (Steely) Shumaker.

June was a 1942 graduate of Strasburg High School. After graduation, she worked at Berger Aircraft in Canton during World War II. June served her community in a number of ways beginning as an employee of Miller’s Studio. She was also a Cub Scout Den Mother, a Brownie Troop Leader, and a volunteer in the early years of the Starlight School.

She met and fell in love with her late husband, U.S. Army Sergeant Richard Dessecker, and they married in 1945. Together, they spent many summers camping and fishing at Leesville Lake, where June was a member of the Huskie Muskie Club. They also enjoyed their membership for more than 60 years at Bisel United Methodist Church, where she served in numerous capacities including church historian, membership chairperson, music director, Sunday School teacher and a delegate to the East Ohio Conference at Lakeside, Ohio. She was also a member of “The Intercessors”, an international prayer group.

Other hobbies June enjoyed were quilting, baking, reading, and completing cross-word puzzles. She also loved visiting and playing with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

June will be deeply missed by her three children, David (Vinnie) Dessecker of Hilton Head, SC, Wanda Ammiller of Oregon, Ohio, and Reenie (Jay) Stein of New Philadelphia; her grandchildren, Samuel (Leigh) Moore of Summerville, South Carolina, Kimberly (Mike) Paris of Columbus, Michelle (Don) Huss of Oregon, Ohio, Matt (Jessica) Ammiller of Medina, Stephanie (Ron) Imer of New Philadelphia, Eric (Katie) Stein of Wilder, Kentucky, Neil (Julie) Stein of Mentor, and Leah (Trevor) Dunne of New Philadelphia; 16 great-grandchildren; her sister, Norma Angel of Bowerston, and her sister-in-law, Pauline Shumaker of Dover; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Dick, on November 14, 2010; her daughter, Barbara Moore; 3 brothers, John, Vernon, and Bill Shumaker; 2 sisters, Audry Stewart and Ella Dean MacMillan; and 2 sons-in-law, Don Ammiller and Steve Moore.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A service celebrating June’s life will be held on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home with Rev. Roger Warnes officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia. Following the committal service, a memorial reception will be held in the Geib Family Center at New Philadelphia.
