Thomas Ray McCartney

October 22, 1935 — January 3, 2014

Thomas Ray McCartney, age 78, formerly of New Philadelphia died early Friday, January 03, 2014 in Union Hospital at Dover following a lengthy illness.

A son of the late Ray “Smiley” and Erma (Hostetler) McCartney, Tom was born at Dover, Ohio on October 22, 1935.

Following graduation from Dover High School, Tom earned a Bachelor’s of Mechanical Engineering from Tri-State College at Angola Indiana. For many years he was employed by Costain Coal Mine at Gnadenhutten where he served as the company’s General Manager.

He was a member of the First United Church of Christ and the New Philadelphia Jaycees. Tom also taught night school at New Philadelphia and was active in the Boy Scouts of America. In his free time, he enjoyed spending time with his family; grilling on the patio, boating, fishing, reading, fixing whatever was broken and woodworking.

Tom is survived by his children, Dede (Kurt) Shelley, Lolly (Perry) Petrullo, Joseph (Cheryl) McCartney all of New Philadelphia, Lisa (Chris) Coutts of Solon and Jill McCartney of Caldwell; grandchildren, Abby Petrullo, Amy Temple and Scott (Danielle) Petrullo, Carly and Maddy Shelley, Taylor McCartney, Chloe and Haley Coutts and Tess and Elli Becker, and a great-granddaughter, Maria Petrullo.

In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Joan “Mike” McCartney.

In keeping with Tom’s wishes, there will be no public visitation or services. Cremation will take place through Geib’s Tuscarawas Valley Crematory.

Memorial contributions may be made in Tom’s memory to Community Hospice of Tuscarawas County, 716 Commercial Avenue SW, New Philadelphia, OH 44663.
