Thelma Mae Penrod, age 90, of New Philadelphia, passed away peacefully early Tuesday morning, May 21, 2013, in Union Hospital at Dover.
Born at New Philadelphia, April 19, 1923, she was a daughter of the late George and Flossie Harper Inherst.
Thelma attended Midvale High School before going to work at the former Everett’s Bakery. Like many young people in her time, she enjoyed “going downtown” on Saturday nights where she met and fell in love with Ivor Penrod. The couple wed May 30, 1940 and would go on to spend the next thirty-four years together before his untimely death on August 4, 1974.
She’ll be remembered for her warm smile, the enjoyment she took from family get-togethers and for her love of travel and shopping. When her husband died, Thelma went to work alongside her daughter at Quick-Shop on West High Avenue, retiring in 1986. She attended the Trinity Gospel Church at Canton. Throughout her life though, she delighted in staying involved in family life.
Survivors include her daughters, Caroline Trachsel, Sandi (John) Grasselli, and Judy Penrod, all of New Philadelphia.
She’ll be sadly missed by five granddaughters, Brenda Stilgenbauer of New Philadelphia, Connie (Steven) Reynolds of Canton, Crystal (Butch) Maxwell of Sugarcreek, Cindy Bake of Midvale, and Carla (Roy) Dowdell of New Philadelphia.
12 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren, and a sister, Loujean Tawney of Midvale also survives.
Her beloved puppy Barbee, and two special neighbors, Diane Furness and Carol Fox, complete her family.
In addition to her parents and husband, Thelma is preceded in death by her brothers John and George Inherst, a sister, Stella Colvin, a brother-in-law, Don Tawney, and two infant grandchildren, Cathy Jo Trachsel, and James Joseph Grasselli.
Friends are invited to call Friday morning from 10-11 in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia where Deacon Ron Fondriest will lead a funeral service for Mrs. Penrod at 11 in the funeral home’s chapel. Burial alongside her husband will follow in Evergreen Burial Park.
Memorial Contributions may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church, 613 North Tuscarawas Avenue Dover, OH 44622.
