Thelma Faye Kughler, 107, of New Philadelphia, died Sunday, January 25, 2009 in Country Club Retirement Campus at Dover.A daughter of the late Charles and Katherine (Brown) Kughler, Faye was born December 7, 1901 at Stone Creek, Ohio.In 1918, at the age of 17, Faye graduated from Stone Creek High School and then attended Normal School at Kent State University. Faye’s professional career as a school teacher began in a one room school house. Over the next 46 years, she taught at various school districts in the area. Following her retirement from teaching, she served as the Postmaster at the Stone Creek Post Office.Faye was an active member of the Lutheran Church. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church at Stone Creek where she was confirmed by Rev. John Shofer in October 1917. She served as the church’s organist for over 50 years. In her younger years, Faye was a member of the Luther League at both the state and local levels and she also served as the Synodical Treasurer of the Lutheran WomenShe was a member of the New Philadelphia V.F.W. Auxiliary, the Stone Creek Garden Club, the Stone Creek Bridge Club and a founding member of the Stone Creek Alumni Association.She is survived by her nieces and nephews, Keith (Nancy) McFarland of Texas, Leland (Carol) McFarland of Doyalstown, Ohio, Robert (Betty Jo) Bucher of Stone Creek, Elizabeth (Richard) Reinhart of Massachusetts, Marlene (William) Crothers of Columbus, Ohio, Cynthia (Kenneth) Stevens of Stone Creek, Renetta (Clifford) Endlich of Stone Creek, Sue McPherson of Arizona, Mary Jane (Charles) John of Stone Creek and Sharon Ridenour-Risley of Uhrichsville.Also surviving are a special grand niece and grand nephew, Commander Amanda John of Washington and Victor John of Columbus, Ohio and numerous grandnieces and grandnephewsFaye was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Hazel Bucher, Gladys McFarland and Evelyn Ridenour; three brothers, Harry, John and Ray Kughler and a nephew, James Ridenour.Friends may call on Friday, January 30, 2009 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia and again one hour prior to the service on Saturday. A funeral service celebrating Faye’s life will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2009 at 11 a.m. in Zion Lutheran Church at Stone Creek with Pastor William Haggis officiating. Burial will follow at Stone Creek Cemetery.
