Terry Lane Wood, 76, a loved and respected Vietnam Veteran passed away March 29, 2023, In University Hospital at Cleveland following a long battle with heart problems.
Born in the Scio Pottery on December 3, 1946, he was the son of the late Hilbert “Jack” and Catherine “Kate” Wood of Uhrichsville, Ohio.
After graduating from Conotton Valley High School in 1964, he joined the US Army in January 1965. After basic training and aircraft maintenance school, he served a year in Vietnam as a door gunner. He was given the nickname, “Lucky” from his comrades. He received his honorable discharge on January 29, 1968 then worked for DuPont Chemical for seven years. In 1977, he re-entered the US Army and retired in February 1994. During his career, he served with different units and saw action in several places with a special operations unit for 10 years. He received the following medals: Army Commendation, nine Air Medals, six Good Conduct Medals, two National Defense Service Medals, Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, two NCO Professional Development Ribbons, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Aircraft Crewman Badge, Driver Mechanic Badge, Expert Marksmanship for M14 and M16 Rifles, and four Overseas Service Bars.
Terry was a life member of the Vietnam Veterans of America, VFW, and Army-Navy Garrison. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 139, a Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus, and a longtime member of Sacred Heart Church in New Philadelphia.
After retiring from the Army, Terry worked for Georgia-Pacific Box Container unit, and retired from Belden Brick Company. He also ran a part-time small engine business for 14 years before retiring permanently.
In March 1994, Terry married his wife, Maria Estrellita Figueroa in the Philippines and they had one daughter, Theresa-Elaine Wood. Terry is also survived by a son, Richard (Jennifer) Wood.
In addition to his parents, Terry is preceded in death by his sister, Nancy, and maternal and paternal grandparents.
The family will greet guests on Monday, April 3, 2023, from 4-7 PM at the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory in New Philadelphia where members of the K of C will honor Terry during a 6:45 PM service. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place in Sacred Heart Church on Tuesday at 10 AM. Military Honors, by the Carl C. Stoller Post 1445 of the New Philadelphia VFW will follow at the church’s flagpole. All are invited to join the family for a meal in the church’s Parish Center following services.
