Steven Scott Sherer

Steven Scott Sherer, age 57, of New Philadelphia died peacefully, Sunday, December 9, 2012 in his home with his family at his side following a courageous and hard fought battle with cancer.

A son of the late Robert and Jean (Hewson) Sherer, Steve was born in Canton, Ohio on October 25, 1955.

Steve graduated from Indian Valley North High School and was employed by the Tuscarawas County Road and Bridge Department for more than 20 years, until his illness forced his early retirement.

He was a longtime member of the Tuscarawas VFW. He also enjoyed working outdoors, gardening, fishing and being with his beloved pets Mocha Jo and Smokey. For many years, Steve participated in the Demolition Derby at the Tuscarawas County Fair and enjoyed bringing others in to paint his car. Steve was known for his ability to fix or build just about anything and could often be found working on a project in his garage/home or working with heavy equipment/ machinery. Steve built his own home and every building on his property.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Sherer, whom he celebrated 25 years of marriage on December 4, their four children, CMSgt Rich (Tricia) Norman, Ret. of Vail, AZ, Michele (Mike) Giffen of Gnadenhutten, Stephanie (Doug) Miles of Uhrichsville, and Ryan (Danielle) Sherer of New Philadelphia; a brother, Dave (Arlene) Sherer; and two sisters, Susan (Gary) Rambaud, and Jennifer (Bryan) Lehigh.

Six grandchildren, Macy and Mitchell Giffen, Gaby, Gavyn, and Gionna Miles, and Gracie Sherer; two brothers-in-law, Jim (Mae) Edwards and Danny (Mardi) Edwards; a sister-in-law, Sandy Demattio and her companion Alan Farver as well as numerous nieces and nephews complete the family.

In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by his first wife, Susan Goss Sherer, who died in 1985; his mother and father-in-law Pete and Maryella Edwards as well as his beloved pets Muffin, Squeakers, Ella, and Rosie.

The family will greet guests on Thursday, December 13, 2012 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM and 6:00 – 8:00 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Reverend Darrell Johnson will lead a celebration of Steve’s life in the funeral home’s chapel on Friday morning at 10:30 AM. Burial will follow in the St. James Lutheran Church Cemetery at Tuscarawas. Following services, all are invited to join the family for a meal and fellowship in the social hall of the John Heckwelder Moravian Church at Gnadenhutten.
