Steven F. Hughes, age 43, of Uhrichsville was called home by the Lord on Dec. 6, 2014 after a period of declining health.
He was born on November 21, 1971 in Union Hospital at Dover, to Steven F. and Carolyn S. (Uhose) Hughes of New Philadelphia.
As a child, Steven enjoyed being in Boy Scout Troop 90 and the time spent at Camp Tuscazoar. He attended First Methodist Church and received confirmation in March 1985. He loved to swim spending many summers at Salt Fork Lake. He learned to waterski at an early age and became excellent at water skiing and knee boarding and loved camping, boating and the many cookouts with his son, parents, sister, grandparents and great-grandparents, and the close group of campground friends. He loved riding his go-cart all over.
After graduating from New Philadelphia High School and Buckeye Career Center in 1990, he was employed by L.J. Smith at Bowerstown until he became disabled with a spinal cord injury in an automobile accident in 1992. He enjoyed listening to music and playing his guitar.
Steven courageously overcame many of his physical disabilities despite the pain from his spinal cord injuries. He enjoyed working with his son on small engines and other vehicles. He was a skilled wood craftsman and together with his son made rocking horses, bird houses, wagons and wheelbarrow planters for family and friends. He loved teaching his son to garden and cook and together they would prepare a variety of their garden vegetables.
He always looked out for his only sister and was willing to help her out in any capacity he was able. He loved and enjoyed his nieces.
In addition to his parents, he will be sadly missed and is survived by his son, Evan (Gamika Presley) Hughes of Cadiz; sister, Christine Stewart of New Philadelphia; grandparents, Floyd and Doris Hughes of New Philadelphia; Uncle, Eugene and Aunt Patricia Hughes, of New Philadelphia; an Aunt, JoAnn (Spahn) Smith of Loudon, Tennessee; two nieces, Nicole West and Brianna Stewart, and four cousins. A special thank you is extended to his caregiver and companion, Terra Gerthing and his best friend, Todd DeMattio.
He was preceded in death by grandparents, Louise Archinal, Steve and Helen Uhose; great grandparents, Everett and Margaret Foster and Ralph and Retha Hughes; an Uncle Gerald Spahn and his beloved German Shepherd dog, Merlin.
In keeping with Steven’s wishes, there will be no public visitation or services, a private family service will be held and cremation will follow through the care of Geib’s Tuscarawas Valley Crematory.
