Stephen Williams

October 7, 1949 — July 24, 2019

Stephen Kent Williams, 69, of Stone Creek, died Wednesday, July 24, 2019 at his home following a period of declining health.

A son of the late Howard and Wilma (Darrah) Williams, Stephen was born October 7, 1949 at Steubenville, Ohio.

Stephen was a veteran of the United States Army and served as a medic in the Vietnam War. Upon his return from the war, he worked as a mail carrier at the Sugarcreek Post Office for 25 years. He also worked as a farrier.

He was a detailed man who remembered dates and trivia regarding history. Steve was a fan of coffee, which had to be black and strong. He was an excellent sketch artist, preferring trees as his main subjects and he highly prized his vegetable gardens, as well as his zinnias and dahlias. Steve also enjoyed a good summer thunderstorm.

Stephen will be remembered as a man of grace and kindness. He loved nature, drawing, movies and good conversations. Above all, he loved his wife, Mary, whom he shared 44 years of marriage, as well as his children who were most important to him. His grandchildren were a treasured part of his life.

With his wife, Steve taught forgiveness, strength and hope and was a proponent of living in the now. He gave so much more to this world than he took and will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his wife, Mary (Hofmeister) Williams; his children, Phillip (Carri) Williams of Paris, Ohio, Heather Soussana of Stone Creek and Sara (Adam) Shanklin of Canton; his grandchildren, Olivia and Logan Williams, Reiley and Reece Cowart, Dylann Monastra, Addy Turick, Katrielle Soussana, Zion Pinkerton and Allen Shanklin; a sister, Karen Harris of Jessup, Maryland and a brother, Roger (Pam) Williams of Cleveland.

Stephen was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Judy Sheripko, Carla Williams and Jean Kahoon and two brothers, Keith and Guy Williams.

In keeping with Stephen’s wishes, there will be no calling hours and cremation will take place through the care of the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A graveside service with military honors will be held on Friday, August 9, 2019 at 2 p.m. in Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery at Rittman.

In memory of Stephen, contributions may be made to Community Hospice Truman House, 716 Commercial Avenue SW, New Philadelphia, Ohio 44663 or simply plant a tree.
