Staley T. Sonny Sedares, age 71, of New Philadelphia died Saturday, August 14, 2010, in Aultman Hospital at Canton surrounded by his family and friends, following a brief illness. Born at Uhrichsville, June 26, 1939, Sonny was a son of the late Gust and Eva Yogmour Sedares. Sonny was a 1957 graduate of Uhrichsville High School. Following his graduation, he was then drafted into the United States Army.Following his discharge, he worked at Track Side Gas Station in New Phila, which was a regular gas and maintenance stop for the Tuscarawas County Book Mobile. It was here that the Book Mobile Librarian, Nelda Swihart, caught his eye. Nelda and Sonny celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary June 5, 2010. They enjoyed evenings together on their porch reclined in their favorite hammock chairs drinking coffee and reading. Always best friends, they did most things together.Sonny was an employee of the local cable company for 38 years, starting with TV Tower through Adelphia Cable Company as a lineman installer. After his retirement, Sonny enjoyed working for pleasure at Valley Gun in Strasburg. He was an avid gun collector and shooting enthusiast, a past-time he shared with his sons and grandkids. He was a lifetime member of the Tusco Rifle Club and also enjoyed reading shooting books and magazines in his spare time. Sonny and his best friend Don (Zippy) Knisely loved going to car shows. Listening to the golden oldies on the radio as he worked around his home made for pleasant times.Sonny and Nelda frequently vacationed in spring and fall with good friends John and Becky Roth to Myrtle Beach and Pigeon Forge. Other particularly special trips were a Virgin Islands cruise and visits to Greece and Hawaii.Sonny was christened in St. George Greek Orthodox Church. He was a regular attendee of Broadway United Methodist Church where he was an active member of the Friendship Class. Surviving Sonny are his wife, Nelda Swihart Sedares, sons, Kevin (Anissa) Sedares of Canton, Christopher (Rebecca) Sedares, a sister, Tana (Tom) Edwards; his mother-in-law Ruby Swihart and a sister-in-law, Sue (Jim) May all of New Philadelphia.Papa Sonny will be greatly missed by his six grandchildren, Kurtis and Tayler of San Antonio, Texas, Christian and Sebastian of New Philadelphia, and Kai and Kesslie of Canton, and also his many nieces and nephews.Sonny was preceded in death by his parents and his father-in-law, Curtis SwihartThe family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 18, 2010, from 5 to 8 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Pastors Bill Sowers and Jim Swihart will lead a funeral service celebrating Sonnys life on Thursday, August 19, 2010 at 10 AM in the funeral homes chapel. Burial will follow in Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia with military honors rendered by the New Philadelphia Carl C. Stoller Post 1445.Following services, the family invites friends to Spencer Hall in Broadway United Methodist Church for food and fellowship. The family requests that memorial contributions in Sonnys name be directed to the American Cancer Society, 525 North Broad Street Canfield, Ohio 44406 or to Community Hospice of Tuscarawas County, 201 W Third Street Dover, Ohio 44622.
