Sophie Ann Lengyel, age 84, of Strasburg, Ohio left her earthly home on Monday, August 13, 2012 to be with her Lord and Savior.
A daughter of the late Walter and Frances (Piercvhala) Gromek, Sophie was born at Weirton, West Virginia on December 15, 1927.
Upon graduating high school, Sophie married Peter Lengyel on April 14, 1947 and as a couple they raised seven children.
For a period of time Sophie worked as a telephone operator and later turned her attention to lovingly caring for each member of her family. Sophie enjoyed cooking and baking and was well known and praised for her homemade cookies.
Additionally, she liked playing card games, especially cribbage, reading, working crossword puzzles, and sewing. Sophie had a natural talent to care for house plants and was known to keep orchids, poinsettias, and African violets in bloom year round.
As an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church at Dover and a member of the Rejoice Christian Women Fellowship, Sophie shared her great faith in the Lord daily.
In addition to her devoted husband of 65 years, Sophie leaves behind six children, Barb (Bill) Roberts of Wintersville, Ohio, Ron (Linda) Lengyel of Oak Creek , Wisconsin, Jim (Valerie) Lengyel of Weirton, West Virginia, Ray (Robin) Lengyel of Fort Mills, South Carolina, Tom Lengyel of Strasburg, and Peter J. (Lisa) Lengyel of Dover.
Three sisters, Bernice Zulkowski, Theresa Nogay, and Irene Gromek-Crago; 13 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews complete the family.
In addition to her parents, Sophie was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandy Lengyel Farley; two sisters, Gladys Zamojski and Ann Gromek; and four brothers, Steve Gromek, Joseph Gromek, Raymond Gromek and Stanley Gromek.
The family will receive friends on Friday, August 17, 2012 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM and 6:00 – 8:00 PM in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover with a Christian Wake Service beginning at 4:00 PM. An additional time of visitation will be held on Saturday, August 18, 2012 from 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM in the Dover Funeral Center.
Father Matt Hoover will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday at 1:00 PM in St. Joseph Catholic Church at Dover. Following the service, all are invited to join the family for a meal and fellowship in the St. Joseph Parish Hall. Private inurnment will take place in Western Reserve National Cemetery at Rittman at a later date.
