Simon E. Korns, age 83, of Dover, passed away peacefully late Saturday morning, July 6, 2013, in the care of Community Hospice House at New Philadelphia.
Born in Goshen Township, December 5, 1929, Simon was one of ten children born to the late William and Lydia Davis Korns, Jr.
A proud veteran of the United States Army, Simon served in the 432nd Engineering Construction Battalion from 1951 – 1953. He served in Germany, then Holland, and was part of the effort to rebuild many roads and bridges following the great flood that devastated the Netherlands in February, 1953. His unit was awarded appreciation for the zealous and indefatigable assistance rendered during the flood and the recovery effort.
Simon returned to the Ohio following his discharge, and went to work for Stillwater Clay for two years. Simon then joined the Timken Company at Canton beginning a career that would span 32 years culminating in his retirement in 1992.
On November 12, 1954, Simon married the former Valeria Hale in First United Methodist Church at Uhrichsville.
Simon will be remembered by many for his decades of service to the Boy Scouts of America. He served as a scout leader to Pack 94 of the Tiger Cubs and Webelos at Dover’s First United Methodist Church. He was the recipient of several scouting related awards including the District Award of Merit in 2005, and the C. Bernard Myers Service Award for exemplary sharing in action in 2010.
Simon enjoyed all of his camp outings at Camp Tuscazoar and Seven Ranges. In his leisure time, he enjoyed bowling and golf and his memberships included the Dover First United Methodist Church, Post 205 of the American Legion at Dover, and 40 Et 8 Tuscarawas County Voiture 117.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of fifty-eight years, Valeria, who resides at Dover, include daughters Theresa (Dennis) Harig of Muskogee, OK, Pamm (Steve) Rutter of New Philadelphia, Joni (Tim) Burnem of Uhrichsville, and Karla Lowther of Dover.
He will be sadly missed by grandchildren Darrick (Melanie) Korns, Jami Harig, Mandi Rutter, and Jennifer (Chris) Lynch.
Eleven great-grandchildren, Dresden Korns, Daniell and Brandon Hupp, Dakota Burnem, Kaylynn Johnson, Mariah and Malachi Rutter, Sidney Lynch, Aubrye, Addison and Kason Moore, also survive.
A sister, Shirley (Arlen) Hostetler of Sugarcreek, completes the family.
In addition to his parents, Simon is preceded in death by a granddaughter, Amanda Burnem, and brothers: Harold, Daniel, Max, Donald, and Kenneth Korns, as well as sisters Ethel Sean Korns, Helen Yost and Catherine Dodge.
Friends are invited to call Wednesday, July 10 from 4-7 PM in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover. The Rev. Dave Kowaleski will lead Mr. Korns’ funeral service Thursday at 11 AM in Geib Funeral Center. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Ridgecrest Memory Gardens. Following the committal service, family and friends will gather for a reception in the fellowship hall of Dover First United Methodist Church.
