Sandy Joseph Scaffidi, age 78, of Dover, passed away Monday evening, October 13, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center.Born April 18, 1930 in Uhrichsville, he was a son of the late James T. and Angela L. (Lamonica) Scaffidi.After graduating from Uhrichsville High School, he joined the United States Marine Corp where he honorably served his country from 1948 to 1952. Sandy was a proud serviceman and was proud of his membership in the Marine Corp League. Sandy began his professional career working for the former Warner & Swasey, Co. In 1993, he retired from Gradall after 39 years of service to the company.Sandy had many hobbies, but especially loved collecting vehicles. He was the driving force behind the formation of the Tri-County Model A Club. He also had a love for music. He began his own dance band, Santo Quintet, as well as playing in several area bands. Sandy was also an active participant in St. Joseph Catholic Church choir where he sang and played his bass violin for more than 28 years. In addition to the church, Sandy was a member at the New Philadelphia Elks Lodge #510. In 1966, Sandy married his wife, the former Nancy Haney. Together they celebrated 42 year of marriage. Throughout their life together, they lovingly raised their son, Jamie (wife, Jill) Scaffidi of Houston, TX. Other family includes his grandchildren, Alec, Maddison, and Ian Scaffidi, all of Houston; his sister, Jennie (husband, Ernie) Carinelli of New Philadelphia; sisters-in-law, Carol (husband, Claude) Hanks of Dover and Norma Haney of New Philadelphia; a brother-in-law, Kenny (wife, Jeanie) Haney of New Philadelphia; and numerous nieces and nephews.In addition to his parents, Sandy was preceded in death by his brother, Pete Scaffidi and his sister, Mary Jean Wert.Father William Arnold will celebrate mass in St. Joseph Catholic Church on Thursday, October 16 beginning at 1:30 p.m. A reception in St. Joseph Family Life Center will immediately follow mass. Burial of Sandy’s cremated remains will take place after the reception in St. Mary’s Cemetery where the New Philadelphia V.F.W. Post #1445 will render military honors.In recognition of Sandy’s love of his church and music, his family requests memorial contributions be directed to St. Joseph Catholic Church, attn: Music Fund, 613 N.
