S. Evelyn Whinery, 94, of Marietta and formerly of the Dover and New Philadelphia areas, died July 19, 2005 at Harmar Place in Marietta, OhioA daughter of the late William Andrew and Martha V. (Harper) Park, Evelyn was born October 7, 1910 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.Evelyn graduated from Oliver High School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Upon graduation from high school, she attended Henry Clay Fricke Teachers Training School.A true friend, this is how Evelyn’s family and friends will remember her.She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in New Philadelphia as well as the secretary at the church for 30 years. She also took part in many church activities. Evelyn was a member of the Qui Vie Literary Club, a former member of the McDowell Music Club and a member of the Friends of the Library.Evelyn was a well known vocalist in the area having sung at many weddings over the years.She is survived by one son, Joseph Clarke (Patricia) Whinery of New Philadelphia; one daughter, Carole (Paul) Garrison of Marietta, Ohio; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Joseph Whinery, one brother, William Park and one sister, Virginia Pollick.In keeping with Evelyn’s wishes, there will be no visitation and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Cremation will take place at the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory. Inurnment will be held at Evergreen Burial Park.
