Ruth V, Kies

Ruth V. Kies, 96, of New Philadelphia, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Sunday May 15, 2005 at New Dawn Retirement Community in Dover.A daughter of the late Salem Henry Towne a veteran of the 75th Illinois infantry in the Civil War, and Mary Larson Towne, Ruth was born on Dec 22, 1908 in Denison Iowa. She graduated from High School in Denison Ia., and then received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Colorado State University, and finally a Masters Degree from George Peabody in Nashville Tenn. She began teaching locally in 1946 as a first grade teacher in Stone Creek, then moving to the New Philadelphia City School District in 1949 where she taught first grade at West Elementary and then kindergarten at Central Elementary. She also taught 2nd and 3rd grade at Tuscarawas Ave., but spent the majority of her career at East Elementary where she taught kindergarten and 1st grade. She retired from education in June 1970 as a teacher at West Elementary.Ruth was an active member of the Broadway United Methodist Church, and had served as a volunteer at Union Hospital for over 26 years. She was a member and past president of the Delta Capa Gamma Sorority, which is an international honorary sorority for women teachers.She is survived by her daughter Carole Ann Kies of New Philadelphia; and one sister Lois Waite, of Brush, CO.In addition to her husband Fred Kies, whom she married December 30, 1945, she is preceded in death by two sisters, Agnes Belle Magarian and Naomi Towne; and one infant sister Louise Towne.Visitation will be today Tuesday May 17, from 2 to 4 P.M. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. Services will be conducted by the Rev Bill Sowers on Wednesday at 1:30 P.M. in the Broadway United Methodist Church, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in New Philadelphia.A reception to honor Ruth will be held following the committal service at the church in Spencer Hall.Memorial contributions to honor Ruth’s life may be sent to The Gideons International P.O.
