Ruth Marsh Werner

Ruth Marsh Werner, age 84, of New Philadelphia, died early Friday afternoon, June 24, 2005, in Aultman Hospital following a brief illness. Born January 2, 1921, she was a daughter of the late Alvin C. Marsh Sr. and Mina Kaserman Marsh. Mrs. Werner was a 1938 graduate of New Philadelphia High School. She attended the Ohio Wesleyan University before graduating from Northwestern University School of Speech. At Northwestern, Ruth was a member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority. On June 5, 1948, Ruth married W. Richard Werner, who survives. The two celebrated their fifty-seventh wedding anniversary earlier this month. An active member of the community, Mrs. Werner chaired and worked on numerous charitable drives. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, an honorary member of the College Club of Tuscarawas County, and a former active member of the Coshocton and Dover branches of the American Association of University Women. She was formerly a leader of a Girl Scout Troop, a life member of the Union Hospital Auxiliary where she was a member of the former TWIG 6, a member of the Music Study Club, and New Philadelphia Chapter #222 of the Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Werner also presented a variety of dramatic programs to civic organizations. She enjoyed needle pointing and playing bridge; but most of all, she enjoyed activities with her family. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Werner is survived by her two daughters, Catherine Werner Gould and husband Edward of New Philadelphia, and Barbara Ann Werner of Canton; one son, William Richard Werner Jr. of Laramie, Wyoming; grandchildren James Lynn Crandall III and his wife Jennifer, Kelly Ann Crandall, Kyle Richard Gould; step-grandchildren Edward M. Gould and wife Lori, Douglas M. Gould, three step-great-grandchildren, a brother, Alvin C. Marsh Jr. and wife Carolyn, one niece and three nephews; and one brother-in-law, Selwyn T. Werner Jr. of Miami, Florida. Friends are invited to call Monday afternoon, June 27, 2005, from 2-4 and 6-8 in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. The Rev. Dr. Steven R. Bailey will officiate Mrs. Werner’s funeral ceremony Tuesday morning at 11 AM in the funeral home’s chapel. Burial will follow at Evergreen Burial Park. Following the committal service, a reception for family and friends will be given in the Geib Family Center, adjacent to the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 201 West High Avenue, New Philadelphia, Ohio, 44663, or to a charitable organization of the donor’s choice.
