Robert L. Stein, age 80, of Dover, formerly of New Philadelphia, died April 18, 2003, at Union Hospital in Dover following a brief illness. Born June 11, 1922, in Fiat, Ohio, he was the son of Robert Edward and Maggie B. Yakley Stein. Robert grew up in Ragersville, and graduated from New Philadelphia High School. He served in the US Navy during WWII from 1942 Â? 1945 and participated in Normandy invasion on D-Day. Robert retired from Marlite in June 1984 following 37 years of service. He was a member of the First United Church of Christ in New Philadelphia, a life member of New Philadelphia VFW Post # 1445 and the New Philadelphia Elks Lodge # 510. He enjoyed golfing woodworking and playing cards in his Tuesday Night Poker Club. Following his retirement he enjoyed traveling with his wife, and he loved spending time with his grandchildren. Together with his wife of 60 years, Alberta M. Ladrach Stein, whom he married October 16, 1942, they raised four sons, Robert Lee (Karen) Stein II of Dover, Ray (Beth) Stein of Tallmadge, Jay (Reenie) Stein of New Philadelphia, Kevin (Saundra) Stein of Columbia, South Carolina. Also surviving are four sisters, Bertie Kaserman of New Philadelphia, Pearl Levengood of North Canton, Lillian Shaw of West Lafayette, Opal Leggett of Dover; ten grandchildren, Mark, Matt, T.J. Stein, Eric & Neil Stein, Aime & Katie Stein, Kayla, Kassie and Michael Stein. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Twila Gonter and three brothers, Walter and Arthur Stein and Charles Pretzeus. Calling hours will be held on Monday, April 21, from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home in New Philadelphia with the New Philadelphia Elks Lodge #510 conducting services at 6:00 PM. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 22, at 10:30 AM in the funeral home with Rev. Jeffrey Gerber officiating. Burial will follow at Ragersville Cemetery, in Ragersville, with New Philadelphia VFW Post # 1445 conducting military honors. A gathering of family and friends will follow at the Ragersville Zion United Church of Christ.Memorial contributions may be made to the National World War II Memorial, 2300 Clarendon Boulevard, Suite 501, Arlington, Virginia 22201.
