Robert L. Evans

Robert L. Evans, age 90, of Uhrichsville, passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus early Friday, November 01, 2013 in Schoenbrunn Health Care Center at New Philadelphia following a brief illness.

A son of the late Arthur and Ella (Moran) Evans, Bob was born on August 5, 1923 at Dunkenwood in Harrison County, Ohio.

He attended Tuscarawas Valley High School and a few years later, he enlisted in to the United States Army where he valiantly served as a member of the 226th Battalion which fought numerous battles that included, The Battle of the Bulge, Rhine River and St. Lowe during World War II. Ever proud of his service to keep his country free, Bob was afforded an opportunity to travel to Washington D.C. during an Honor Flight in November of 2009. He and other veterans toured the World War II Memorial, Arlington Cemetery, changing of the guard, the Iwo Jima Memorial, and other memorials throughout the capital.

A hardworking, gentleman, Bob was employed for 37 years at the former U.S. Concrete until it closed in 1976. He later began working for the former Shenango Penn Mold of Dover and retired in 1985.

Bob loved being retired as it gave him more time to perfect his golf game. He frequented Five Waters and Big Bend Golf Courses where became known by all as “Sausage” on the links. Additionally, he served as the resident professional at the former H&A Driving Range.

For many years, Bob was a member of the Uhrichsville Eagles and attended Grant Street United Methodist Church at Dennison and Newport United Methodist Church at Uhrichsville.

He was an individual who had an extremely infectious smile, an outgoing personality and was always ready to banter with anyone who accepted the challenge. It was a rare occasion Bob would travel anywhere and not have those he came in contact with laughing by the end of his visit. He even had a traditional banter session with his own grandchildren where they called him Pete and he would in turn call them George.

He will be missed by his children, a son, William (Cathy) Dill of North Middleboro, Massachusetts; three daughters, Joyce (Gene) Frantz, of Dover, Ohio, Rebecca (Wilbur) Hughey of Uhrichsville, and Sally (Rev. James) Huston of New Philadelphia.

Completing the family are 14 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Evelyn Evans; a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Judy Dill; a granddaughter, Gale Anne Frantz-Stephens; two sisters, Harriet and Evelyn; three brothers, Willard, Delmer, and Albert and two infant sisters and an infant brother.

The family will receive friends on Monday, November 4, 2013 from 1:00 – 3:00 PM and 6:00 – 8:00 PM in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A celebration of Bob’s life will be led by his son-in-law and grandson, Rev. James and Rev. Jim Huston on Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at 1:30 PM in the funeral home’s chapel. Burial with military honors will take place in the East Avenue Cemetery at New Philadelphia. Following services, all are invited to join the family for a time of food and fellowship in the Newport United Methodist Church Social Hall.
