Robert L. Eckert, 67, of New Philadelphia, died Monday, November 18, 2013 in Community Hospice House at New Philadelphia following a lengthy illness.
A son of the late Max and Thelma (Gross) Eckert, Robert was born July 25, 1946 at Dover, Ohio.
Robert graduated from New Philadelphia High School in 1964. He was then drafted into the United States Navy and served overseas during the Vietnam War.
He retired from the Ohio Department of Transportation as a highway worker. Robert also worked as a carpet layer for over 25 years.
Robert enjoyed being in the outdoors especially when gardening and tending to his yard. He enjoyed completing crossword puzzles, he was an avid Elvis fan and could often be found in his garage listening to Cleveland Indians games on the radio.
He is survived by his wife, Cheri (Comanita) Eckert whom he married on November 11, 1983; his children, Carrie Eckert of New Albany, Ohio, Ryan Eckert of Memphis, Tennessee and Todd Eckert of New Philadelphia;his grand dogs, Lilly, Guiness and Bailey; his siblings, Lanny Eckert of Dover and Irene (Joe) Mutersbaugh of New Philadelphia and his brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Denise and a sister, Pat Scott.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, November 21, 2013 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A private service celebrating Robert’s life will be held on Friday and in keeping with his wishes, cremation will follow.
