Robert Edmund Avon, 92, died Saturday, May 10, 2014 at his residence in Dover.
A son of the late Edmund and Margaret Avon, Robert graduated from New Philadelphia High School in 1939. Following graduation, Robert served in the United States Army during World War II, where he was stationed in Alaska and Panama.
After 40 years, Robert retired from Joy Manufacturing Company in 1987, leaving his position as a Buyer in the Purchasing Department. In his spare time, Robert enjoyed watching sports, doing crossword puzzles, and reading. For over 20 years, Robert could be seen walking regularly in New Towne Mall.
A quiet and reserved person, Robert was a member of the First Christian Church in New Philadelphia, where he formerly served as a Deacon. He also served as Financial Secretary and Treasurer for many years, although he had not attended in recent years. Robert was also a life member of the New Philadelphia Elks.
Robert is survived by his wife of 64 years, the former Mabel Kinsey, whom he married on May 14, 1950; a daughter, Laura L. (Joseph Tedesco) Avon of New Philadelphia; 1 grandson, Keith (Kim) Avon of Dover; 8 great-grandchildren, Danielle, Dylan, Darren, Diedra and Chantz all of Dover, Trent, Lyrissa and Leann of Marion; 1 great-great-granddaughter, Alana of Marion; 2 step-grandsons; several step-great grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Pat Avon; and a sister-in-law, Jean Avon.
In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by a son, Gary L. Avon and a brother, James W. Avon.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia. A funeral service will follow at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Jim Borton officiating. Burial will follow in East Avenue Cemetery at New Philadelphia.
