Robert E. Barrows, 97, of New Philadelphia, died early Thursday morning, October 6, 2011 in Union Hospital at Dover.A son of the late Raymond C. and Harriett A. (Hibbs) Barrows, Robert was born July 13, 1914 at Mannington, West Virginia.He graduated from Mannington High School in 1932 and was a veteran of the United States Navy serving during World War II. Robert retired from Monongahela Power Plant at Albright, West Virginia where he worked as a supervisor.Robert was a member of the United Methodist Church and the George D. Jackson American Legion Post #56, both at Kingwood, West Virginia. He enjoyed gardening, walking; until his health no longer permitted him to do so and reading constantly. His true passion was West Virginia Mountaineer Football and he also enjoyed watching the Cleveland Indians and Browns. Most of all, however, he dearly loved his children and grandchildren.Surviving are his grandchildren, Suzanne Haupt and her husband Frank Haupt of Jackson Township, Ohio and Steve Shade and his wife Alana Grover-Shade of New Philadelphia and two great grandchildren, James and Ali Haupt of Jackson Township, Ohio.Completing the family is a special niece, Linda Bradley of Cuyahoga Falls; a niece, Martha Ann Brown of Pennsylvania; a nephew, Frank Barrows of Florida; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Gerald and Betty Freeland of Mannington, West Virginia and numerous great nieces and great nephews and cousins.Robert was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Leota Ruth (Freeland) Barrows whom he married on December 31, 1937; a daughter, Shirley Cerett; a brother, William Barrows; a sister-in-law, Rita Wetzel and two brothers-in-law, Bud and Junior Freeland.In keeping with Robert’s wishes, there will be no calling hours or services and cremation will take place through the care of Geib’s Tuscarawas Valley Crematory. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Mannington Memorial Park at West Virginia.Those wishing to do so may send the family a personal condolence and view an online memorial by visiting the funeral home website.
