Robert D. Carlisle, Jr., age 88, of Amberwood Care Center in New Philadelphia, died Thursday evening, March 24, 2005. He was a former resident of Goshen.Born December 14, 1916, near Goshen, Robert was a son of the late Robert D. and Bertha L. (Stoecklin) Carlisle.He was a member of the Midvale High School Class of 1935 and was the Ohio Golden Gloves Middleweight Boxing Champion from 1939 to 1941. An active member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (RLDS) for 74 years, he was ordained to the office of Priest in 1955 and the office of Elder in 1961. He served as the elected Pastor of the New Philadelphia branch of the RLDS church from October, 1965 to September, 1967.In 1982, he retired from Republic Steel in Canton, where he worked for 31 years.He was preceded in death by four sisters, two brothers, and wife, the former Catherine Cambourelis James (neeVaralli) who died in 1980, and recent wife, the former Elizabeth Renicker who passed away in February of this year.He is survived by his daughter, Mary Varalli-Perry of Kent; sons, Daniel Varalli of Independence MO, and Robert D. Carlisle, III of New Philadelphia; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and sisters, Rebecca Clerici and Roberta Warner both of New Philadelphia.Visitation will be Tuesday, March 29, 2005, between the hours of 5 and 8 p.m. Services to celebrate Robert’s life will be conducted by High Priest Glenn Carlisle and Elder Daniel Varalli on Wednesday, March 30, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. in the Geib Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at East Avenue Cemetery in New Philadelphia. Following the committal service, members from the church will provide a reception for family and friends in the Geib Family Center, located adjacent to the funeral home.Memorial contributions may be made to the organization or charity of the donor’s choice.
