Robert C. Vaughn, 78, of New Philadelphia, passed away peacefully in Union Hospital on Wednesday evening, September 20, 2017, following a period of declining health.
Born in Cleveland on July 1, 1939, Bob was the son of the late Courtney Alfred and Vella Bell (Young) Vaughn. Bob completed his formal education at Stone Creek High School.
Bob shared his gifts and talents in a variety of industries, but he loved serving with the New Philadelphia Fire Department and being a co-owner of the former Quaker Ambulance Service. Bob worked 20 years at Sherman Drilling and ultimately retired from Vaughn’s Garden Center which he and his wife, Carolyn, owned and operated for 15 years. In retirement, he continued to work at the garden center and for Sears.
Bob was also a New Philadelphia Auxiliary police officer, a mounted deputy, and worked with the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Department.
In his free time, Bob enjoyed his trains, woodworking, antique shopping with his sister, flying his RC planes with his friends, fishing, and being with his grandchildren. He was also a devoted Mobile Meals volunteer.
He will be deeply missed by his loving wife, the former Carolyn Cua, whom he married on April 30, 1980; his sons, Rick (Gail) Vaughn of Bolivar, Doug (Tina) Vaughn of Canton, Chris (Gail) Vaughn of New Philadelphia and Rob (Tina) Vaughn of Newcomerstown; his step-daughters, Sue (Shaun) Creager of Newcomerstown, Kim (Hal) Harmon of Dover, and Wendy (Bill) Kennedy of Uhrichsville; grandchildren, Kyle, Alyssa, and Andrew Vaughn; step-grandchildren, Tracy Burkey, Gavin Blankenship, Abby Creager, Kolton and Kayla Nay, Noah and Rees Creager, Chloe Kennedy, Lisa Snyder; and great-grandchildren, Elijah, Leah, and Lucas; and step-great-grandchildren, Devon, Courtney, Raina, Lincoln, Brendan, Cameron, and Nina; several step-great-great-grandchildren; and his sister, Shirley Kidd of Cambridge.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his sister, Jeanie Vaughn Pickering.
Family will receive friends in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home at New Philadelphia on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. A memorial service will begin Tuesday morning at 10 am in the funeral home chapel followed by inurnment at Evergreen Burial Park.
