Robert Amos Baum, age 83, of Dover, died Saturday, June 23, 2007 surrounded by his family at his residence.Born June 20, 1924, in East Canton, Ohio, he was a son of the late Elija B. and Edna M. (Motts) Baum. After completing his formal education at East Sparta High School, he entered the United States Army where he honorably served our country from 1943 to 1947. He was stationed in North Africa, China, Burma and also India during his tour of service. He was a life member of the V.F.W. Post 1445 at New Philadelphia.Upon return from the service, Robert began his professional career, retiring from GTE as a maintenance staff member in December of 1990.Robert was an active member of his church, New Cumberland Methodist Church where he served as past chairman of the church council. He was also a member and past master of the Fairfield Grange and a member and steward of the Pamona Grange. On February 12, 1946, Robert married the love of his life, the former Joyce Plummer. Together, they were blessed with a wonderful family including his four daughters, Joyce Ann (Donald )Rufener and Patricia (Glen) Gerber, both of Dover, Roberta (Ronald) Rufener of New Philadelphia, and Peggy Raye Baum of Strasburg; grandchildren, Vanessa (Nick) Johnson of Dover, Jody Gerber of Dover, Heather (Bill) Turner of Petersborough, Canada, Don (Tammy) Rufener of Uhrichsville, Doug Rufener of Newcomerstown, Matt (Mary) Border of Gnadenhutten, Philip Rufener of New Philadelphia, Robert Rufener of Canton; great-grandchildren, Cameron Johnson, Hannah Gerber, Billie Turner, Evie Turner, Donnie Rufener III, Tawnya Rufener, Colin Border, Aaron Border, and Kaitlyn Border. Robert will also be missed by his sisters, Marie Little of Magnolia, June Fiddler of Canton, Doris Farber of Sandyville, and Barbara (Donald) Harper of Delroy; and four brothers, Junior E. Baum of Pickford, Michigan, Virgil G. Baum of East Sparta, Ray W. Baum of Magnolia, and Glen Baum of Mineral City.In addition to the surviving family he was preceded in death by his only son, Robert Daniel Baum, and three brothers, Paul E. Baum, Chester Baum, and Delbert Baum, Visitation will be held in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover on Monday, June 25 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A funeral celebrating Robert’s life will be held in the Geib Funeral Center at Dover on Tuesday morning at 10:30 with the Rev. Bud Milligan officiating. Burial will follow at New Cumberland Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to the Geib Funeral Center at Dover following the committal service where a luncheon will be served.In gratitude for their exemplary care, the family requests memorial contributions be directed to Hospice of Tuscarawas County Inc., 201 W. 3rd Street, Dover, OH 44622.
