Richard Romig Rasche, 87, of Galveston, passed away Tuesday, May 6, 2003.He was born April 20, 1916 in Uhrichsville, to the late George and Charlotte Romig Rasche. He graduated from New Philadelphia High School and attendedWooster College and Ohio University. In 1942, he served in the Army AirCorps and served as a weather observer in Augusta, Georgia. After servicehe was employed by the U. S. Weather Bureau and worked in numerous locationsin the South Pacific. He also served in the U. S. Coast Guard doing weather observations and upper air observations. After resigning from the WeatherBureau, he returned to New Philadelphia, Ohio to assist in the operation ofhis family’s landscaping business. He graduated from Arizona StateUniversity, summa cum laude, and received a Master of Library Science fromthe University of Illinois where he held the Katherine Sharp Fellowship. Heworked for nine years at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and thenserved as the Curator and Rare Book Cataloger for the Moody Medical Library at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston until his retirement.After retirement, he worked part-time with the Rosenberg Library, GalvestonCollege Library, and the Library at Moody Gardens.He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Jackson Rasche, of Galveston; daughter, Charlotte Mae Rasche, of Houston; brother and sister-in-law Dan and Mary Rasche of Columbus, Ohio; brother, David Rasche of Minneapolis, Minnesota; five nephews and great nephews and nieces. He was a member ofFirst Presbyterian Church in Galveston, the American Library Association, Western History Association, Western Literature Association, Texas StateHistorical Society, Galveston Historical Foundation, East End Historical District Association, Friends of Moody Gardens, Friends of Moody Mansion, Friends of Rosenberg Library, Jean Lafitte Society, Texas German Society,Oleander Society, UTMB Retirees, Moody Methodist Bell Ringers, and the “Share Your Life Story” writers group.Visitation will be held Sunday, May 11th 2003, at the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home in New Philadelphia from 2 to 5 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Monday, May 12th beginning at 11am, followed by burial at Evergreen Burial Park in New Philadelphia. Friends and family are invited to the Geib Family Center, located adjacent to the funeral home, following the committal for a luncheon.
