Richard Glenn Gibson, 93, of New Philadelphia, passed away peacefully Thursday morning, May 9, 2013 in the Hospice House following a period of declining health.
Born in New Philadelphia on February 23, 1920, he was the son of the late Charles and Nina M. (Allman) Gibson. After graduating from New Philadelphia High School in 1938, Richard joined the United States Army. He was stationed in Europe during World War II and upon discharge as Captain, he received the Purple Heart.
Richard married his lifelong companion and friend, the late Dorothy Elizabeth (Blind) Gibson, on May 10, 1941. They shared a beautiful life together before her passing on May 19, 2001.
Richard spent his professional career as an insurance agent with Gibson Insurance Agency in New Philadelphia where he was a partner.
His community involvement was of significant importance to him throughout his lifetime. He was a member of a number of organizations including the New Philadelphia V.F.W. Post #1445; the New Philadelphia American Legion; the Military Officers Association of America; the B.P.O. Elks #510 where he was a Past Exalted Ruler; and various other civic, business and service organizations.
Richard’s faith as a child was nurtured in the First Presbyterian Church, where he recently rejoined in 2008. He was a longtime member and worshiped at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in New Philadelphia also.
He will be deeply missed by his children including Joan E (James) Hugo of Avon Lake, Donald G (Kathy) Gibson of Dover, and Daniel R (Kathy) Gibson of Ephrata, Pennsylvania; grandchildren, William (Amy) Gibson, Steve Gibson, Doug (Jenny) Hugo, Jennifer (Matt) Hans, Patrick (Emily) Gibson, Danielle (David) Bartos, Stacey (Cory) Shank, Sam (fiancé, Erin Estabrook) Gibson, Kimberly (Charles) Sensenig, and Stacy Geiman; and 13 great-grandchildren. Numerous nieces and nephews complete the family.
In addition to his parents and wife, Richard was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Charles.
Visitation will be held in the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory at New Philadelphia on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. Pastor Bill Sowers will officiate a service celebrating Richard’s life on Monday at 10:30 in the funeral home chapel with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in East Avenue Cemetery at New Philadelphia.
Friends are invited to the Geib Family Center, located adjacent to the funeral home, where a meal will be shared following the committal service.
